Cruise Price Drops, Explained

Cruise fares move with demand. Here is why they fall, and when a drop can work for you.

A cruise price drop is simply the fare for your ship, date and cabin category falling below what you paid or were quoted. It happens because cruise fares are managed like airline seats: they move with demand, week by week.

Why a Cruise Price Drop Happens

Slow-selling sailings

When a ship has more empty cabins than the line expects for that point in the booking cycle, fares in those categories may be cut to fill them.

New promotions

Lines launch sales throughout the year, and especially in the early-year booking period known as Wave Season. A new sale can lower fares on sailings you have already booked.

Category shifts

Sometimes one category drops while the next one up does not — or a higher category becomes cheaper than yours for a while.

Changing demand

News, fuel costs, competition from new ships and the wider economy all nudge fares up or down.

The flip side matters just as much: fares rise too, and popular cabins sell out. A cruise price drop is a possibility to watch for, not something to count on.

What You Can Do About a Drop

What you can claim depends on three things: your fare type, the line’s own policy, and whether you have reached final payment.

  • Before final payment — many lines will reprice a booking to a lower available fare for the same ship, sailing and category, though you may lose perks from the original promotion. See price dropped after booking.
  • After final payment — the options narrow sharply. See price drop after final payment.
  • Non-refundable fares — some lines adjust these as onboard credit or future cruise credit rather than a cash refund.

Royal Caribbean is one line that publishes its approach: its Best Price Guarantee FAQ says that if you find a lower price for the same cruise, date and room type on its own website or call center, it will match it when requested before final payment or within 24 hours of booking, and that the program is not available in every country or for every reservation. Other lines handle drops differently, and policies change, so always check the current terms for your booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cruise prices go down closer to sailing?

Sometimes, and sometimes they rise. If a sailing is selling slowly, a line may cut fares or add perks; if it is selling well, fares usually climb and the cheaper categories sell out. There is no reliable rule, which is why booking a fare you are happy with and then watching it is safer than waiting.

Is a new promotion the same as a cruise price drop?

Not always. A promotion might add onboard credit or a drinks package while the fare stays the same, or lower the fare while removing an earlier perk. Compare the total value, not the headline.
